There are many real-time strategy games out for the PC. Yet if you look at the current consoles, you will notice a slight difference in the numbers compared to the PC. Unfortunately there are not many RTS games, but Ubisoft Shanghai has decided to change this by introducing Tom Clancy’s Endwar for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and of course the PC.

The story behind Tom Clancy’s Endwar is focused on the next big World War, World War III. And before you even think about it, this is not the same World War III envisioned in the classic 1985 novel Red Storm Rising. Instead this World War has incorporated modern conflicts and future technology. The story is set in the year 2020 and is focused on three factions. The three factions consist of the United States, Europe, and a newly empowered Russia. However, there are tensions between the United States and its European allies across the waters. Apparently there is a conflict between the two about the United States militarizing space by launching a space station called the Freedom Star. With this newly established space station, the United States can deploy troops anywhere in the world within 90 minutes. So where is Russia within all this? Well, they are laying back and reaping the rewards from the oil supply and gas supply since the rest of the world is in an energy crisis. With this new profit, they are able to re militarize themselves and become a superpower once again.

This is where you, the player, will come in and decide how you want to partake in the war for supremacy by choosing a faction and a battle from a world map. Since this is a real-time strategy game, you will control a set of units within a 3D world. The units will be split among the number of players present on each side and the way you control your units is different from the way you are accustom to with any other real-time strategy game.

The control scheme behind Endwar is the most sophisticated and easy layout you will ever use. You use the controller and your voice to issue commands to your units on the screen. Even controlling the camera is a breeze because all you do is speak the name of the group you want to see and saying “camera” after to move it. This new addition to real-time strategy gameplay will make it easier to control units, even when they are not visible on the screen.

Of course like all real-time strategy games it does take some strategy to win a war. The goals for all battles are to control strategic points on the maps, such as communication towers or network nodes. With these points secured you will be able to call in air strikes or artillery.

With all this new goodness packed within Tom Clancy’s Endwar, it comes to no surprise this will become a real-time strategy game for any console. Also the PC is getting the same amount of love, so PC gamers should not be discouraged. Tom Clancy’s Endwar is scheduled to be released next year so strap on your boots and helmets. It’s time for war!
