A bunch of news rolled out of Sony Computer Entertainment today at a company press conference in Tokyo. Notably, the company will be offering online-download movie rentals in HD and SD formats starting this summer. Limited-time HD downloads are expected to run at about $6 US, with standard-def content at $4 a pop.

For the fiscal year ending March 31 next year, Sony hopes to accelerate sales of their PlayStation 3 and reduce hardware costs at retail. SCE is confident that profit will be turned for the current 12-month period, touting that PSP sales were up 146 percent during the latter half of the last fiscal year, with PS3 sales up 200 percent.

Sony also revealed an interactive news service for the PlayStation network, which will let users scan a virtual globe for info, photos, and real life, up-to-the-minute headlines.

Sony promises more details at E3 2008.
