Manhunt 2's M Rating Sustained

ESRB Says Modifications Don't Count

The Electronic Software Rating Board wasn't happy when it received word that a home-modded version of Manhunt 2 for the PlayStation Portable was the equivalent to the earlier version of the game they rated AO for Adult Only. Manhunt 2 was released with an M for Mature rating on October 29, but it was only days after that hackers found a way to erase the recent developments that made the game 'suitable' for the North American market.

However, ESRB reported yesterday that they will not be demanding a change to the rating.

"We have investigated the matter," said the organization's statement, "and concluded that unauthorized versions of the game have been released...however, we do not believe these modifications fully restore the product to the version that originally received an AO rating, nor is this a matter of unlocking content."

So what's the difference between the circumstances here and the ones that met Rockstar's Take-2 development team with Gran Theft Auto: San Andres? According to the ESRB, the modifications that plagued that game were much more accessible and didn't require modified consoles to run.

ESRB took the opportunity to stress again that "parents need to be vigilant about monitoring what their children are downloading on the internet."
